The City and the City
Price: AUD 34.99 Author: China Mieville

China Mieville’s new novel defies easy synopsis. The story revolves around a brutal murder in the eastern European city of Beszel. But this is no ordinary city – it exists side by side with the parallel city of Ul Qoma. Individual streets can cross from one place to another and the residents have to carefully ignore the existence of their foreign counterparts in order to avoid “breaching” – a transgression rigorously prosecuted. When Inspector Tyador Borlu’s investigation crosses over the divide, he finds himself embroiled in a shadowy conspiracy that reveals strange truths about his homeland. This superb fantasy is challenging, complex, and strikingly original.

Galileo’s Dream

Galileo was a visionary who, like all such people, was both revered and reviled. He was at odds with the establishment and went beyond the point where most people were happy and secure in their own certainty about how the world and the universe worked. Kim Stanley Robinson paints an absorbing picture of this man at odds with his world whilst setting his sights to new worlds. And it is this that the author uses as a plot device. Galileo finds himself the subject of attention by people living in the year 3020 who need to enlist his help.

Drood
Price: AUD 32.95 Author: Dan Simmons

Staff Review by James: Drood tells the story of the last five years of Charles Dickens’ life and his relationship with fellow author, Wilkie Collins. This is a surprisingly gruesome tale set in a dark Victorian underworld of opium dens, crypts, and sewers. Collins narrates the story of Dickens’ fascination with mesmerism and his obsession with a shadowy, ominous character named Drood.

Memoirs Of A Master Forger
Price: AUD 29.99 Author: William Heaney

Memoirs Of A Master Forger centres on an influential bureaucrat in the policy area of homelessness in central London. William is involved in a lucrative sideline operation involving the forgery of first edition books, the proceeds of which he donates to his favourite refuge for the homeless. Added to this mix is the fact that William sees demons. This detail would ordinarily make this novel a no-go area for me, but to my great surprise I was completely seduced by William Heaney’s skilful storytelling.

Anathem
Price: AUD 35.00 Author: Neal Stephenson

Historical and philosophical ideas form the heart of Stephenson's work. In the best fiction such ideas spring naturally from the story line, as with the author's previous Baroque trilogy, examining the dawn of the 'Age of Reason'. When the ideas discussed seem to take precedence over the plot, however, this is normally a major technical flaw. Stephenson is such a stylish, witty and erudite writer that he almost manages to get away with it. Almost - but, unfortunately, not quite. Parts of Anathem border on the didactic at times, with long discussions of mathematical theorems and the philosophical ideas of Plato (or Protas as he is called in this universe). Nevertheless, there are still some trademark Stephenson set pieces to enjoy along the way and the finale is both exciting and thought-provoking.

Blood Of Elves

The problem is that her power does not differentiate between good and evil and she must be directed in its use. Ensconced with Geralt, the witcher of Rivia, it is thought she is safe. But, all is not as it appears and Geralt and Ciri are in grave danger. This Polish author brings a new voice to the fantasy genre.

The Kingdom Beyond

Once you get your head around the baroque weirdness of the characters and setting, this is an enjoyable fantasy adventure involving submarines, robots, zeppelins and mad scientists. Think of an hallucinogenic version of Jules Verne and you'll get the rough idea! Perhaps not quite as well sustained overall as his first book but still compelling and highly readable.

The Margarets
Price: AUD 35.00 Author: Sheri S Tepper

Staff Review by James: Tepper's first book in five years is ambitiously complex, involving multiple characters on many different worlds (or at least multiple versions of the same character). In this cautionary tale over-population on Earth has reached such epidemic proportions that human children remain the only proitable export and are sold off en masse as indentured servants or house-pets to various alien cultures, in exchange for water. The rather convoluted nature of the story unfortunately robs it of some of the impact of her earlier work. Nevertheless, Tepper stil maintains her unique and individual voice within the SF genre and her deep-felt environmental and sociological concerns are once more powerfully to the fore in this new novel.
